Background: Nancy Arkuss is a ceramic artist who has returned to the vessel tradition and uses the wheel as a tool. When she first starts, she uses the wheel to create several shapes and then they are removed. They are then assembled, altered, manipulated, and carved. Her work is not meant to be functional. Instead she wants to "celebrate the spirit of the vessel as a sculptural entity." Most of her work relates to the female form in some way. She likes "dressing" her sculptures and enjoys making the clothes move and flow. Each of her work have their own personality and attitude that when grouped together "look and feel like they are going to a party, ready to dance the night away!"
Inspiration: When I created the teapot, I drew inspiration from Nancy Arkuss's collection of work, called Celebration of the Vessel, because of the interesting and engaging forms that she has created to resemble women. With my teapot, I used my inspiration from her work to create a teapot that also resembles a woman. I created movement and gave it a "sassy" flair. I did this by titling the teapot and giving it curves, similar to Arkuss's work.
